The Light of the World

William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) painted Christ as THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD twice. For his last and largest version, painted towards the end of his life, he designed this frame  in the Arts & Crafts style that he helped to establish.
Room is made in St Paul’s Cathedral for pilgrims to reflect in front of this evocative portrait. where it usually dominates the North Transept.  It is said that Hunt, once an agnostic, himself became a believer during the work.  Inspired by the words “Behold I stand at the door and knock”, Hunt, by painting the door overgrown with ivy and weeds, gave an insight into his own conviction, that it might not be so easy to open, nor would it be so easy to find; and behind the light of the world that shines on the apples of Eden, in the dark above the frosty orchard, bats fly under the starlight.  We used to supply this reproduction of the picture in this gold plated, die-cast replica of the frame (140mm x 87mm) to the gift shop at St Paul’s. Designed to stand on a shelf or side table. We have only FOUR replicas left. It is no longer made and is available only here.
The original lamp that features in the painting was made to the artist’s specification by William Hacking, an otherwise uncelebrated London ironmonger.

The lamp was auctioned at Bonhams on 1st November, 2001 and sold for just over £50,000.  It is now owned by Manchester City Art Gallery, who themselves have a third version of the painting by another hand.  We have based our miniature copy of this lamp on Hunt’s original drawings in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford.  Designed to be used as a nightlight, the darkness will be lit in the patterns of light that Hunt captured in his masterpiece.

A7  THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD picture & frame £45.00
Replica of St Paul's Cathedral painting

The actual lamp that features in the famous painting "The Light of the World"  was made to the artist's specification by William Hacking, an otherwise uncelebrated London ironmonger.  It came up for auction in the year 2001 at Bonhams in London and finally sold (after the auction) for just over £50,000.  It is now owned by Manchester City Art Gallery, who themselves have a third version of the painting by, unfortunately, "another hand".  We have based our copy of this lamp on Hunt's original drawing in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.  Used as a nightlight, the dark will be lit in the patterns of the light that Hunt captured in his masterpiece.  William Holman Hunt, the artist, complained bitterly about the price (£7) charged by his local "ironmonger".

The very long copy that accompanied the Bonhams sale makes for fascinating reading.  Click READ MORE now.
